Emergencies
Emergencies can happen anywhere at any time. We hope that this will never be the case for your pet, but if your pet does need an emergency vet, you should be prepared.
While our Elgin and Algonquin hospitals do not offer after-hours services, our Dundee veterinarian offers 24-hour emergency care seven days a week. Our experienced staff works on call to provide emergency care 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
If your pet is not a regular patient, we’re more than happy to work with their primary care veterinarian. Detailed reports explain your pet’s condition, test results, medications given, follow-up recommendations and more. Should your pet require specialized care, we can communicate with specialists in the area to find the best option.
Microchipping
A loose collar, a frayed leash, a door ajar or a momentary distraction. Sometimes, that’s all it takes for a pet to go missing. And while an updated ID tag on your pet’s collar can help, tags can also fall off and go missing, or be easily removed. On the other hand, a cat or dog microchip is forever; it can’t be removed, misplaced, or dropped.
At Dundee Animal Hospital, we recommend that every pet be microchipped to give them the best chance at returning home.
Pet Surgery
If your veterinarian recommends cat or dog surgeries, you may have several questions. Will it be safe? Will my pet be in pain? How long will it take them to heal?
We can answer all of these questions and more at Dundee Animal Hospital, where our team puts patient safety above everything else. Your pet is a beloved part of your family, and we know how important it is to give them the best possible care while they are with us.
Furthermore, as an AAHA-accredited hospital, you can rest assured that we will take every measure necessary to make sure your pet is healthy, happy and pain-free when they leave our facility.
We encourage you to ask any questions you have about your pet’s surgery. We will be glad to fill you in on what to expect the day of their procedure.
It is important to us that you fully understand every step of the process and feel comfortable placing your pet in our care.
Avian Exotic & Pocket Pets
Dogs and cats are our most frequent visitors, but we can also provide pocket pet*, avian and exotic vet care by appointment during non-emergency hours.
Dr. Adamo, Dr. Lupo, and Dr. O’Brien are well trained in treating less conventional pets. Your furry or feathered friend should see us routinely for wellness checks, imaging and diagnostics. Whether your ideal pet is a hedgehog, ferret, Scarlet macaw or hamster, they deserve the best treatment we can offer.
Before you adopt your new pet, it’s important to understand the responsibility they will require. Avians, exotics and pocket pets need lots of care and attention and should see their veterinarian at least once a year for a comprehensive exam.
*Due to allergies, we are only able to treat rabbits and guinea pigs at our Elgin location.
Euthanasia & Cremation
Our pets’ lives can never be long enough. In time, you will need to make difficult decisions regarding your companion’s end-of-life care.
Addressing the question “does my pet have a good quality of life?” is one of the biggest challenges in pet ownership. Our team members understand this, and want to do everything possible to help you through the decision-making process.
Consequently, as pets age, they can develop various health issues including arthritis, incontinence and diabetes. Keeping them healthy and comfortable is imperative.
We like to see older pets more often to monitor their health and check for problems. If your pet is happy and functioning well, we’ll continue the treatments needed to keep them at that level.
However, if your pet’s health is declining or has a poor prognosis, we may suggest cat or dog euthanasia as the most humane option. For pets with terminal illnesses or irreversible conditions, euthanasia is the kindest course of action. We want to help you relieve their suffering in any way possible.
Pain Management
Keeping pets comfortable whether they are recovering from surgeries or living with a chronic condition at home is one of our highest priorities.
Pain can have a debilitating effect on our four-legged best friends, from limiting their appetite to making them lose interest in the activities they used to love. It can also make vet visits more stressful!
Our AAHA-accredited animal hospitals in Dundee, Elgin, and Algonquin are conscious of the impact pain can have on pets and do everything possible to provide pain relief for dogs & cats.
Pet Vaccinations
While we can’t remove bacteria, parasites and pathogens from your pet’s environment, we can keep your pet protected with cat & dog vaccinations. At Dundee Animal Hospital, we carry all of the vaccines your dog or cat will need to stay protected throughout their life.
Furthermore, we can create a customized pet vaccination plan to suit their specific lifestyle. Once we have established a plan, we’ll explain your pet’s vaccination schedule.
Many vaccines must be given annually to remain effective. In addition, puppies and kittens will need to receive a series of boosters to “boost” their immunity levels.
Like children, pets are extremely vulnerable to illness when they are young. Starting them off on the right paw might seem daunting, but that’s why we’re here to help! From one year to the next, you can count on us to be there for you and your best friend.
Wellness Care
Our time with our pets is always far too short, but we can help you make that time count!
Further improvements in veterinary medicine and education enable our pets to live longer than they ever have before, and we’d like to continue this trend.
Pet wellness protocols are vital to your pet’s health and longevity, because they allow us to proactively prevent disease and other issues.
Working collaboratively with pet owners and maintaining a consistent schedule will go a long way towards helping them spend more quality time with their beloved companions.
Diagnostics
A physical exam may tell us that your pet is sick, but may not be able to tell us exactly what is ailing them.
We also cannot obtain a comprehensive health profile without going more in depth. With our cutting-edge cat and dog imaging, diagnostics and veterinary experts, we can examine your pet internally using minimally-invasive technology*.
Furthermore, this technology gives us faster, more accurate results that we can interpret to find the best diagnosis and therefore the best treatment.
For healthy pets, our diagnostics help us set a baseline for their overall health, which we can use as a benchmark for future health evaluations. These tools give us the opportunity to conduct a much more thorough exam and catch problems that might otherwise go undetected.
*Must have an existing client/patient relationship with Dundee Animal Hospital; cannot be a new client referral.
House Calls
Saying goodbye to your pet is one of the hardest things you will ever have to do.
Many clients request in-home euthanasia because it allows their pets to spend their final moments in a peaceful, familiar environment. Your pet always deserves to feel comfortable and relaxed, especially during this time.
If you have concerns about your pet’s condition and suspect that euthanasia might be the next step, simply reach out to us and we’ll do everything we can to help.
Pet Dental Care
Cat & dog teeth cleaning is not just a cosmetic solution for whitening your pet’s teeth and freshening their breath. It also plays a major role in preventing painful and possibly debilitating oral health problems. Brushing your pet’s teeth every day may seem like over-attentive behavior, but it can significantly reduce plaque and tartar buildup.
Furthermore, this habit can prevent conditions such as gingivitis and gum disease from ever developing. Dundee Animal Hospital offers complete, customized pet dental care programs to prevent future issues and treat existing ones.
Our skilled veterinarians and technicians closely follow all AAHA guidelines when performing dental procedures and related services.
Your pet’s dental health is directly connected to their overall health. If their mouth is inflamed and showing signs of infection, they also likely have problems elsewhere.
Creating a dental care plan is an important first step towards giving your pet a healthier, happier life.
Spay And Neuter
You may have heard the words “spay and neuter your pets” many times before. While we have come a long way in veterinary medicine, pet overpopulation is still a major concern in some areas of the country.
It’s important to our team at Dundee Animal Hospital that your pets have a healthy start in life. One of the fundamental steps we recommend for all of our clients is to have their pets spayed and neutered while they are still young.
Cat and dog spay and neuter surgeries are both a preventive and preemptive form of treatment. Your pet’s life may just be starting, but you need to anticipate potential problems in their future.
Spaying and neutering prevents unplanned pregnancies and reduces or eliminates undesirable behaviors. Furthermore, it eliminates the possibility of your pet developing cancer when they are older.
Your pet’s age, breed, species and health history may also play a role in determining whether surgery is the best option.
